Sketchy
2*
This was certainly not our favourite hotel/motel on our trip, but it was by no means the worst. We arrived late at night and the receptionist unlocked (this was the first hint it wasn't situated in the most welcoming of areas) door. Check in was simple and they required a credit/debit card for incidentals. The lift was then out of order, however the receptionist did help us carry our bags up the two flights of stairs.
Upon entering the room, the smell of marijuana was palpable. This smell never left the room but you just adapted to it. The room, other than the smell, was actually fairly clean. It was also very spacious and the bed was large. There were great amenities like a microwave, large fridge and a TV with lots of channels. There was no safe however. The heating was excellent and the shower was okay.
Unfortunately housekeeping was not great, 2 of the 5 nights we stayed, housekeeping didn't attend our room despite our door having the 'maid requested' sign visible for the majority of the day. When they did clean the room however, it was completed to a very high standard.
The location of the motel is also good, there are buses all around and it is walkable to Fisherman's Wharf and even downtown if you're active! Despite the motel having lots of 'extra' safety features and the previous comment, the area during the day felt pretty safe.
If I returned to San Francisco on a budget then I would consider staying here again, however if I returned on a one-off then I would probably look for somewhere that was a bit more pricey.
