5 Nights for Travelling
4*

We arrived on a Sunday evening after taking the E23 from the airport to Shan Si Street. I used Google Maps to then locate the hotel; it is fairly big with a big iClub sign so it wasn't too hard to find after walking around for a bit. We chose the hotel as it had a moderately good location against its price (i.e. better located hotels were far more expensive so this was a 'compromise'). It is somewhat close to Whampoa MTR station, although this was closed due to vandalism while we were there [protests]. There is a ferry terminal to North Point about 10 minutes walk away, the fare was 7.5 HKD. As prior mentioned, it has good bus connectivity with the rest of the city. Also there is a supermarket almost right underneath the hotel which is useful for snacks/drinks etc.

The check in location was slightly unclear as it is just a desk in the lobby with not much else going on. In comparison to our stay in Chengdu, the staff spoke very good English, no deposit was required and we got our key cards for a room on the 18th floor.

The room had a slightly weird smell however we think it may be due to the pest control activities they undertake, or perhaps the cleaning products, however you get used to it anyway. The air conditioning was great, perhaps aided by the size of the room which was very small, so heating/cooling was almost instant. As the room was small, the toilet space was small, but still sufficient, and the shower was fairly big. The room was equipped with amenities like a safe, cable TV (with National Geographic and Discovery channel), kettle, fridge, hairdryer, two bottles of water and limited free toiletries (more on request though). The bed was comfortable and situated right up against the window so we had a great view of the city, but it may be scary for those with a fear of heights!

We were surprised to find out they offered a complimentary breakfast, which consisted of toast, spreads, and on a few days, pastries (2 days there were no pastry unfortunately). There was also a 24 hour free coffee machine and water refill station, and juice in the morning. It wasn't busy at all when we stayed but this was probably due to the political issues in Hong kong at the time. We used the hotels washing facility which was 50 HKD for a wash and the tumble dryer which was okay.

Upon departure we utilised the hotels express check out; just deposit the key, and then also made use of their free shuttle bus service as the protests had caused the suspension of over half of the cities buses, alas the hotel shuttle ferried us across Kowloon to the Airport Express station where we got the A12 bus to the airport.

We would definitely stay here again if visiting Hong Kong.

Cheapest room
3*

We stayed in the cheapest room [special room (no windows)] to save money while travelling. Therefore this review is focused towards the lower class of their rooms.

The location of the hotel is ideal, one reason we chose it, it is moderately close to the 2nd People's Hospital metro station (about 5-10 minutes) and before arrival the hotel kindly got in touch with clear instructions on how to reach the hotel, an issue we had overcome with a previous hotel. There wasn't a great deal of food places around, at least not that we found, but it is within walking distance of the TV tower and the bars below, and Wenshu Yuan monastery, among other locale.

The crossing outside is daunting; it is a huge junction with a lot of cars, however we made it across to check in. Check in was simple enough, they asked for a 300RMB deposit and then provided our room key for a room located on the third floor. Having no windows, it is pitch black if you turn off all the lights so you never know what time of day it is. I like to put items straight into a safe, however this was the first issue as it was not functioning. I went to the front desk and to be fair, they were able to fix it within about 30 minutes. Another issue regarding the room, other than light, was noise, the walls seemed to be made of paper and you could almost hear people breathing in the corridor, not to mention a drainage pipe ran behind the room so everyone flushing a toilet or showering in the room above provided a very loud sound of rushing water. Furthermore, the room gets extremely hot, despite there being three separate air conditioning devices (central, a fan, and a plug in air conditioner). We also noticed some small bugs throughout the duration of our stay, I don't think they were of the harmful type however. You could argue 'you get what you pay for', although you would expect things like a working safe and perhaps some reinforced walls...

On a positive note, there was a free minibar that provided more than just water; two soft drinks and two juices, as well as snacks daily. The toiletries were adequate and refilled when the room was cleaned, daily. Other amenities like a hairdryer and kettle are provided, as well as a TV, but this had no English stations, only CCTV occasionally airing English geographical documentaries. Rather unique to this hotel in comparison to those we've stayed at so far however was the free use of laundry facilities which was welcome. We did some washing, however I think the tumble dryer is slightly broken but our clothes did turn out fine. The gym is located along side the laundry, though I wouldn't really call it a gym, just a treadmill, bike, and range of free weights.

As for the restaurant, we can't comment on breakfast as we did not have it (we ate at a nice bakery, left of the hotel and roughly one block away as you exit) but we did have dinner one night which was very nice, perhaps a bit oily, but very filling and relatively cheap, especially for a hotel, and had very efficient service. The desk were fairly helpful, however we did have to use our translator app frequently, and unfortunately the maps they provide of the area seem to be extremely out of date, with the metro map, for example, only showing four lines, despite there being ten...

To conclude, if you're looking for a cheap room for a few nights in Chengdu then this hotel is adequate, perhaps the more expensive rooms offer better service however I cannot comment. The stay was satisfactory.

Free tea samples a bonus
5*

A rare find in Chengdu; this peaceful monastery offers an insight into local culture and also a place to relax and drink tea or eat. Entry is free, somewhat of a rarity, and they even had free small taster cups of tea. Surrounding, there are various shrines which are visited respectively by locals and visitors alike. The whole area is well maintained with nice gardens, clean walkways, and the smell of incense fills the air. There is a social atmosphere around the tea house and it all seems very calm. The architecture is something to marvel at as well.
